Part p bathroom zones. Whilst it is important to select the style of fitting to suit your decor safety is the most important factor when choosing a light for your bathroom. Part P has been changed. Zone 2 is an area stretching 06m outside the perimeter of the bath and to a height.

Applicable to both Zone 1 or 2 a SELV fans with a rating of IPX5 or above may also be installed in these areas. Part P applies to electrical installations located in outbuildings such as detached garages sheds and greenhouses. Zone 1 is the area above the bath or shower to a height of 225m from the floor.

In a bathroom only the areas directly surrounding the bathtub or shower are deemed to be special locations See Building Regulation 12- 9. The zones in a bathroom are an important safety feature and designed to keep us safe both when installing devices and when using them. Competency in this case will mean a full qualified knowledge of electrical installations.

Although this is now common practice and is a requirement of Part P of the Building Regulations - it is worth double checking especially in older buildings. Its also worth noting that most shower lights are rated at IP65 in any case. Part P of the Building Regulations states that any electrical installations must be carried out by a competent person.
